SYRIA EMERGENCY APPEAL

A Decade into Crisis, Your Help is Needed More Than Ever

2024 marks the thirteenth year of the Syrian conflict, a distressing milestone where 80% of Syrians live in poverty, struggling for essentials like food, water, shelter, and even basic hygiene supplies. Idlib’s ongoing conflicts have displaced over 13 million individuals. The death toll has reached half a million, with countless others injured or detained. With unemployment over 50% and bread prices doubling, life is harsh in a country where 80% survive on less than £1 daily. Every second person faces hunger nightly. At United Muslims, our mission is to ensure that those affected by the conflict have access to food and the basic necessities that many of us take for granted. Your donation can make a tangible difference, providing the means to offer nourishment and hope to those facing hunger in this devastated land.

Over a year has passed since devastating earthquakes struck Türkiye and Syria, shattering countless lives. Numerous buildings, schools, homes, and vital infrastructure lay in ruins. With the arrival of harsh winter conditions, those displaced or living in makeshift shelters face the added challenge of surviving the cold. While efforts to clear debris and rubble progress, the path to restoring a semblance of normality for these communities is long and fraught with challenges. There remains an urgent need for funds to provide immediate support and to aid in the longer-term recovery and rebuilding efforts. We appeal to your generosity to contribute to our earthquake appeal today and help those in dire need to rebuild their lives.

In Syria, over 7 million children urgently require assistance. The ongoing civil war has displaced millions, subjecting children and their families to extreme suffering. A decade of conflict has severely affected the lives and futures of countless children and the coronavirus pandemic has resulted in significant loss of life, leaving many children orphaned and in the care of their grandparents, who often lack the means to support them. In collaboration with our partner organisations, we’ve made strides in getting children back into school, ensuring they continue their education despite the challenges. These children cherish the opportunity to attend school, reunite with friends and teachers, and pursue their learning with enthusiasm. Your contribution can help restore a sense of normalcy to these children’s lives.

SYRIA EMERGENCY APPEAL

When the dust settles, only emptiness remains.

The devastating earthquakes that struck northwest Syria and southern Turkey have left a profound impact, particularly in northwest Syria, a region already isolated due to ongoing conflict. The natural disaster exacerbated the dire situation, with significant loss of life and destruction of homes.

In the aftermath, Syrians have faced immeasurable loss and ongoing trauma. One individual recounted the harrowing moment when the earthquakes demolished his home, resulting in the tragic loss of his wife and four children. Despite finding new shelter, the fear of aftershocks remains a constant anxiety, threatening the fragile sense of safety for him and his surviving children.

The emotional toll is heavy, with individuals visiting the graves of their lost loved ones, seeking solace and struggling with the reality of their absence. The necessity of moving forward has led some to seek new partnerships, in hopes of finding some semblance of normalcy and support for the children left behind.

In Jandares, northwest Syria, the situation is similarly grim, with families displaced and living in inadequate shelter, struggling against the elements and the lingering fear of further quakes. Mothers recount the challenges of protecting and comforting their children amidst such instability.

Elsewhere, a widow shared her resolve to provide for her remaining child after losing her home and eldest son in the quake. Despite the pain and challenges, she is determined to rebuild a life for them, embodying the resilience many Syrians are forced to muster.

The earthquakes have not just disrupted lives physically but also left deep emotional and psychological scars, with communities struggling to rebuild and individuals grappling with the losses and changes inflicted upon their lives. The Syrian Civil Defense, known as the White Helmets, reports extensive casualties and injuries, highlighting the urgent need for aid and support in these regions.

Do you think you will be admitted into Paradise without being tested like those before you? They were afflicted with suffering and adversity and were so ˹violently˺ shaken that ˹even˺ the Messenger and the believers with him cried out, “When will Allah’s help come?” Indeed, Allah’s help is ˹always˺ near.

Since the earthquake, Syria has encountered numerous additional challenges, including escalated conflicts, a severe economic downturn, and climate change-induced disasters, further worsening the situation. There was a significant increase in conflict in northern Syria, leading to numerous casualties, injuries, and the displacement of thousands. Additionally, airstrikes have added to the instability in various regions. The economic crisis, intensified by sanctions, has led to a drastic devaluation of the Syrian currency and rampant inflation, turning everyday items into unaffordable luxuries.

An overwhelming majority of Syrian households are unable to meet basic needs, forcing dire choices regarding their children’s well-being. The impact of conflict and natural disasters has left many children, facing loss and trauma, without adequate support or educational opportunities. Mental health support for the youth is scarce, despite high levels of sadness and distress reported among children. The exodus of healthcare workers, including mental health specialists, over the past decade has exacerbated the situation. Children in northern Syria express ongoing fear, not only from natural disasters but also from the constant threat of violence. The education system, already faltering with thousands of schools damaged and millions of children out of school, suffered further as the earthquake damaged over half of the schools in northwest Syria, deepening the educational crisis.

The disaster hit areas already scarred by conflict, escalating the humanitarian crisis while support and resources have decreased.
