FITRANA

Giving Fitrana: A Key Part of Eid

Zakat-al-Fitr (Fitrana) is a mandatory charity that must be given before Eid-al-Fitr. Every self-sufficient Muslim is required to contribute, as it serves multiple purposes. It purifies the fast, making up for any mistakes during Ramadan, and ensures that the needy can celebrate Eid without worry. It also strengthens community bonds, fostering unity and compassion, while demonstrating obedience to Allah by fulfilling a religious obligation. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized that Fitrana not only purifies the fasting person but also allows those less fortunate to enjoy the celebrations of Eid.

The fast of Ramadan is like ten months, and the obligation of Zakat al Fitr is like two months. Whoever gives it before Eid prayer will have it accepted as Zakat, and whoever gives it after Eid prayer has given a voluntary charity." (Sunan In Majah).

The Essence and Calculation of Zakat ul Fitr

Traditionally, Zakat-al-Fitr was given as one saa’ of food, which is about 2.2 to 3 kg of staple items like rice, barley, or dates. Today, many people choose to give its monetary equivalent, making it easier to distribute quickly to those in need. United Muslims is therefore at the forefront to distribute the Fitrana amount to those in need. All donations collected in the form of Fitrana are then used to buy staple foods for Muslim families from their local markets, keeping the essence of Fitrana alive and including as many people as possible in the festivities.

Every adult Muslim who has more food than they need must pay Fitrana, emphasizing unity and shared responsibility in the community. The standard measurement, based on Prophetic tradition, is about four madd, the amount that fits into two cupped hands. For 2025 in the US, the set amount for Eid Fitrana is $6.32 per person. This ensures that every eligible Muslim fulfills their duty while helping those in need celebrate Eid with dignity.

How to Pay Zakat-al-Fitr

Here is a quick and easy guide to calculate your Fitrana for the month of Ramadan 2025:

  1. Calculate Your Contribution: The set amount is based on the price of staple foods like rice or barley. In 2025, the standard amount is $6.32 per person in the US. Use our Zakat-al-Fitr calculator to determine the total amount for your household.
  2. Choose a Trusted Charity: Make sure your Zakat-al-Fitr is distributed before the Eid prayers. At United Muslims, we ensure timely and proper distribution to those in need.
  3. Pay on Time: Fitrana must be given before Eid prayers, so those in need can receive it in time to celebrate. We ensure your donation is distributed promptly; however, we urge all our donors to make their payments on time and not wait until the end of Ramadan to pay their Fitrana. Remember, every penny donated during the month of Ramadan has an greater impact if it reaches the needy in time. Let us be vigilant in performing our duties this month of Ramadan.
  4. Cover Your Dependents: Include all dependents when calculating your Fitrana to ensure that everyone in your family fulfills this obligation.
  5. Choose the Best Payment Method: Traditionally, Zakat-al-Fitr was paid in food, but today, monetary donations are more efficient. Donate with us, and we will ensure your Fitrana reaches those in need.
  6.  Make Your Intention (Niyyah): Your donation should be made sincerely for Allah, seeking His blessings and reward.
  7. Get Confirmation: Always make sure your donation is received. United Muslims offers full transparency, and you can request a receipt for your records.

The fast remains suspended between heaven and earth until payment of Fitrah is completed" (Sunan In Majah).

Support United Muslims: Give your Zakat-al-Fitr to us with 100% of your donations directly funding our initiatives.

Since its founding, United Muslims has ensured that every donation goes directly to its projects, covering any credit card fees. For example, if a $126.43 donation drops to $122.64 due to fees, the organization adds $3.79. This strict separation of project and operational funds ensures full utilization of public donations.
