Zakat al Fitr (Fitrana)

Embracing the Essence of Eid with Zakat al Fitr (Fitrana)

Zakat al Fitr (Fitrana), also known as Fitrana, is an obligatory charitable donation, ensuring every Muslim participates in the act of giving as Ramadan concludes. It is due from every self-sufficient Muslim, aimed at cleansing those who fast from any indecent act or speech, and helping the poor enjoy the celebrations of Eid.

According to Islamic tradition, as narrated by Ibn `Abbas and reflected in the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), this act of giving serves multiple profound purposes: purifying the fasting person and providing for the needy.

The fast of Ramadan is like ten months, and the obligation of Zakat al Fitr is like two months. Whoever gives it before Eid prayer will have it accepted as Zakat, and whoever gives it after Eid prayer has given a voluntary charity." (Sunan In Majah).

The benefits of Zakat al Fitr (Fitrana) in Islamic teachings are extensive and profound:

  • Spiritual Purification: Zakat al Fitr (Fitrana) serves as a means of purifying the fasting Muslim from any indecent act or speech and from errors made during the month of Ramadan, enhancing spiritual growth and self-discipline.
  • Supporting the Needy: It ensures that the less fortunate can partake in the Eid al-Fitr celebrations without worry, promoting social welfare and community spirit.
  • Promoting Brotherhood: By giving Zakat al Fitr (Fitrana), Muslims demonstrate solidarity, fostering a sense of brotherhood and unity within the community.
  • Obedience to Allah: Fulfilling this obligation is an act of obedience to Allah, which can lead to increased faith and closeness to the Creator.
  • Gratitude and Reflection: It serves as a reminder to be grateful for one’s blessings and encourages reflection on the plight of those less fortunate.

These principles help maintain a balanced, compassionate, and devout Islamic society.

Guide to Fulfilling Zakat al Fitr (Fitrana)

Assessment of Amount: Establish the Zakat al Fitr (Fitrana) amount, usually the cost of a basic meal in your locality, reflective of staple foods like rice or barley. Use our Zakat al Fitr (Fitrana) calculator to calculate the amount due.

Choosing a Charity: Select a reputable, well-established charity known for effective Zakat distribution, ensuring they can deliver the aid before Eid prayers. At United Muslims, we take extra measures to fulfil religious duties and never misguide our donors.

Timeliness: Allocate your Zakat al Fitr (Fitrana) well before the Eid prayers to ensure the beneficiaries receive it in time for the celebrations. At United Muslims, we make sure that all donations received as Zakat al Fitr (Fitrana) are distributed before Eid prayers.

Coverage for Dependents: Include in your Zakat al Fitr (Fitrana) calculations all dependents under your care, ensuring everyone eligible is accounted for. Use our Zakat al Fitr (Fitrana) calculator to calculate the amount due for your household.

Mode of Payment: Decide whether to donate the traditional food items or the monetary equivalent, based on local customs and the most pressing needs of the recipients. It is more convenient and advisable to donate in cash with us and let us take care of the rest.

Intention: Make your donation with the clear intent to fulfil this pillar of Islam, seeking Allah’s pleasure and the well-being of the less fortunate.

Confirmation and Receipt: Ensure you receive confirmation of your Zakat al Fitr (Fitrana) being received by the charity and, where possible, a receipt for your records. At United Muslims, we keep transparent relations with our donors and you can also request for a receipt after making donations with us.

The Essence and Calculation of Zakat al Fitr (Fitrana)

Traditionally, the donation consists of one saa’ (approximately 2.2 to 3 kg or equivalent in local staple food) of food. Today, its monetary equivalent is often given, simplifying distribution and ensuring those in need receive timely support.

Each adult Muslim who possesses food in excess of their needs must fulfil this duty, signifying unity and collective responsibility. The standard measure, rooted in Prophetic tradition, equates to about four madd — the volume collected with two hands cupped together. Modern calculations typically equate this to a specific monetary value, allowing for global consistency and ease.

Many inquire about the set amount for Eid Fitrana. This donation, gauged by staple foods’ cost, is typically around £5 per individual in the UK. This figure represents the required contribution from each person to fulfil this duty.

Fulfilment and Timing: Ensuring Timely Aid

The optimal time for discharging Zakat al Fitr (Fitrana) is before the Zakat al Fitr (Fitrana) prayers but can be given during the last days of Ramadan. This ensures that the aid reaches those in need in time to celebrate Eid. Reflecting on the broader purpose, this charity aids in purifying the fast and enabling a collective expression of gratitude and joy at Ramadan’s end.

The fast remains suspended between heaven and earth until payment of Fitrah is completed" (Sunan In Majah).

Islamic scholars emphasize the dual benefits of Zakat ul Fitr: it purifies the giver from any errors during Ramadan and provides the needy with means to celebrate the special day. It’s a reflection of Islam’s holistic approach to welfare, ensuring no member of the Ummah is forgotten.

As we approach the end of Ramadan, calculating and distributing Zakat ul Fitr is a moment of reflection and kindness. It is an opportunity to fulfil a divine command and strengthen the bonds within our community. Let this act of generosity be a beacon of light, illuminating the path to a more empathetic and united society.

Support United Muslims: Give your Zakat-ul-Fitr to us with 100% of your donations directly funding our initiatives.

Since its founding, United Muslims has ensured every donation goes to its projects, covering any credit card fees. For example, if a £100 donation drops to £97 due to fees, the organisation adds £3. This strict separation of project and operational funds ensures full public donation utilisation.
