Muslims all throughout the world feel something special during the month of Rabi’ al-Awwal. It is the month of the birth of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). For a lot of Muslims, this time is not just about remembering the past, but  focusing on his teachings and bringing them into practice now.

The Quran says:

“Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example for whoever has hope in Allah and the Last Day, and remembers Allah often.” — Surah Al-Ahzab (33:21)

The life of the Prophet (PBUH) teaches us to be kind, helpful, and devoted to others. Rabi’ al-Awwal encourages us to deepen our relationship with his teachings and follow his actions.

What is Rabi’ al-Awwal?

Rabi’ al-Awwal is the third month of the Islamic calendar and holds a lot of spiritual meaning. The 12th of Rabi’ al-Awwal is the day that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was born. His blessed arrival brought hope, justice, and mercy to a world filled with hardship and inequality.

The Quran says:

“We have sent you ˹O Prophet˺ only as a mercy for the whole world.” — Surah Al-Anbya (21:107)

Muslims across the world, mark this month with gratitude, love, and reflection. For many, it is a time to study the Seerah, attend gatherings, and increase acts of worship such as prayer and sending blessings upon the Prophet (PBUH).

Why Rabi' al-Awwal is Important to Muslims Today

We still learn from the life of the Prophet (PBUH) today. His message of equality, compassion, and generosity is essential. Rabi’ al-Awwal encourages Muslims to follow these values every day, even in places like the UK, where there are different kinds of people. You can do this by volunteering, making your community better, or just being polite to other people.

This month is also the best opportunity for families to share the stories about the Prophet (PBUH) with their kids to help them love his character and legacy. Reading Seerah books, telling stories, and talking about him with family can help the next generation remember him.

Charity in Rabi’ al-Awwal: Following the Sunnah

One of the most meaningful ways to honour the Prophet (PBUH) is through charity. He never turned anyone away and encouraged Muslims to give with open hearts.

As mentioned in the Quran:

“The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills.” — Surah Al-Baqarah (2:261)

Rabi’ al-Awwal is not only a month for reflection but also for action. Muslims often give Zakat and Sadaqah by supporting food distribution, clean water projects, education, or emergency aid in regions such as Palestine, Afghanistan, and beyond.

Each act of generosity spreads hope and honours the Prophet’s (PBUH) mission of mercy.

Acts of Kindness Beyond Money

Charity in Islam is not just about giving wealth. The Prophet (PBUH) said:

“Even a smile is charity.” (Tirmidhi)

We can follow his example by spreading kindness in our communities, whether checking on neighbours, volunteering at food banks, or helping community projects. Every small act of giving counts in the eyes of Allah.

United Muslims makes it easy to give Zakat with a 100% donation policy. Each penny goes directly to charity projects in the UK and around the world.

Bringing hope through small acts of kindness—a meal, a helping hand, or a gift can light up a child’s day.

Honouring the Legacy of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

Rabi’ al-Awwal is more than a commemoration; it is a call to action. It encourages us to live with compassion, generosity, and integrity. It is mentioned in the Quran:

“Whatever you give in charity is certainly well known to Allah.” — Surah Al-Baqarah (2:273)

United Muslims encourages everyone to use this time to reflect, give, and make a difference. By embracing the spirit of Rabi’ al-Awwal, we honour the Prophet’s (PBUH) legacy and keep his light alive in our hearts.

This Rabi’ al-Awwal, United Muslims invites you to honour his legacy through acts of giving and mercy.
