Homelessness is not just something you hear about on the news. It is happening on our streets and in our neighbourhoods. Whether it is a family unable to keep up with rising rent, a refugee searching for safety, or someone forced onto the streets, the absence of shelter is a harsh reality that many people face.

In Islam, giving someone shelter is one of the most essential acts of kindness. It’s not just about bricks and walls; it’s about giving someone their dignity, comfort, and hope back. Our faith tells us to be kind and take action.

For Muslims, helping the homeless is not just a kind act; it is a duty. Through giving to charity, we are encouraged to uplift those who are vulnerable and create a community where no one is left out in the cold.

The Islamic Duty to Care

In Islam, giving to those in need is not just encouraged. It is an important element of our faith and a responsibility we carry. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

“He is not a believer whose stomach is filled while his neighbour goes hungry.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)

Having a safe place to live is just as important as food and water. A roof over one’s head brings protection, dignity and stability. When we help someone find shelter, we are not just making things easier. We are offering them hope and relief.

The Quran shows us what it really means to give:

“And they give food in spite of love for it to the needy, the orphan, and the captive, [saying], ‘We feed you only for the countenance of Allah. We wish not from you reward or gratitude.'” — Surah Al-Insan(6:8-9)

This generous perspective applies to all acts of charity. If you offer food, give Zakat, or help build a home, Allah will bless you.

The Life of the Prophet

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) led a simple life, but he was always there for the needy people. He welcomed the poor into his home, shared what he had, and never turned away anyone who needed help or a place to live. His really cared about them, and his actions were full of compassion.

In today’s world, homelessness is often hidden in plain sight, either on bustling streets or in numbers. But the Prophet’s example shows us that everyone is important. Islam tells us to be kind and helpful to everyone, whether it’s a refugee child, a mother who is having a hard time, or an elderly neighbour who needs help.

Zakat and Shelter

Zakat is one of the essential parts of Islam. It’s not just a duty; it is the best way to help those who are facing hardship. When you give your Zakat, you are actively helping those in need find safety and stability. The Quran says:

“Zakat expenditures are only for the poor and the needy, for those employed to administer it, for those whose hearts are attracted ˹to the faith˺, for ˹freeing˺ slaves, for those in debt, for Allah’s cause, and for ˹needy˺ travellers. ˹This is˺ an obligation from Allah. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.” — Surah At-Tawbah (9:60)

Giving your Zakat to help with shelter projects is a direct way to help with these goals. Your donation can provide someone with safety and the space to start again.

Charity is More Than Just Giving Money

Giving to charity is being there for people who need help. Across the UK, Islamic charities continue to lead the way, both locally and across the world. Through your kindness, lives are being transformed every day. From helping the homeless in London to supporting shelter projects in Palestine, your kindness is reaching those who need it most.

At United Muslims, we believe giving in charity should be heartfelt, meaningful, and easy. Whether you are donating food, supporting clean water projects, or helping build safe homes in Gaza, Kenya, Bangladesh, or Afghanistan, every act of kindness matters.

Give more than charity and offer someone the peace of a place to call home.

Support the homeless

A Shelter is a Mercy

Giving someone a place to stay is among the most meaningful forms of Sadaqah. It is more than just a roof over their head; it is about giving peace of mind and a sense of safety. When someone knows they have a safe space to rest, they can begin to heal, rebuild, and look ahead with hope.

Islam encourages us to be the helping hand that lifts someone back on their feet. As mentioned in the Quran:

“And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.” — Surah Al-Baqarah (2:195)

Sometimes, doing good is as simple as offering a warm meal, a cosy blanket, a temporary refuge, a door that opens to safety, or just a smile that says you are not alone.

Giving Shelter is a Community Duty

Islam teaches us that responsibility is shared, and we are all together. It is not simply the government or a few kind people who should take care of the homeless; it is our duty as a whole. Building shelters, supporting housing projects, or helping someone pay their rent are all things that show what brotherhood and sisterhood really mean in Islam.

And the reward is powerful. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

“Whoever relieves a Muslim of some worldly distress, Allah will relieve him of some of the distress of the Day of Resurrection” (Sahih Muslim)

Helping someone who is going through a hard time brings blessings in this life and the next. Allah promises ease for those who ease the burdens of others.

Giving Locally and Globally

Charity in the UK is just as vital as supporting global causes. The need to give charity knows no borders. From supporting rough sleepers on our streets to donating to Palestine relief, every act of giving counts.

When you give charity, donate food, or offer your Zakat, you are not selecting one cause over another. You are choosing kindness for everyone. Every act of kindness has the power to bring comfort and hope where it’s needed most.

Bringing hope through small acts of kindness—a meal, a helping hand, or a gift can light up a child’s day.
