There are periods in every age that teach us how powerful love and unity can be. The story of the Ansar and the Muhajirun is one such timeless reminder. It shows how faith can unite hearts and turn selflessness into a way of life. Their actions were about sharing wealth or food and giving from the heart.

A Timeless Example of Kindness

The story of the Ansar and how they helped the Muhajirun who moved from Makkah is one of the most moving stories in Islamic history.

These early Muslims gave up everything for Allah, including their homes, families, and possessions. When they arrived in Madinah, they had little more than faith in their hearts. But the Ansar were happy to see them. They didn’t hesitate, ask questions, or look away. They treated them like family.

The Quran says this amazing thing:

They love whoever immigrates to them, never having a desire in their hearts for whatever ˹of the gains˺ is given to the emigrants. They give ˹the emigrants˺ preference over themselves even though they may be in need. And whoever is saved from the selfishness of their own souls, it is they who are ˹truly˺ successful.” – Surah Al-Hashr (59:9)

The Ansar shared their food, their homes, and even their land. They didn’t see the Muhajirun as strangers; they saw them as family. This act of kindness is one of Islamic history’s best examples of selflessness.

This story still speaks to us today, especially in the UK, where communities continue to grow through kindness and unity. It reminds us that charity is not just about giving money; it’s about giving from the heart.

The Meaning of Giving

The Ansar showed what true generosity looks like. They didn’t give because they had an excess of wealth. They gave because their faith inspired them to.

Allah says in the Quran:

“You will never achieve righteousness until you donate some of what you cherish.” – Surah Al-Imran (3:92)

To spend “from what you love” means giving something that has value to you, not what you no longer need. The Ansar did exactly that. They shared their homes, comfort, and livelihoods with those who had nothing.

Another verse says:

“Whatever you donate will be paid back to you in full, and you will not be wronged.” Surah Al-Baqarah (2:272)

We aren’t losing anything when we donate to charity, give Zakat, or support a Palestine appeal. We are receiving the blessings of Allah, both in this world and the next.

Even a small act, like a food donation, a water charity gift, or a donation for Palestine, can bring relief to someone in distress and draw us closer to our Creator.

Charity: A Key Part of Our Faith

In Islam, giving is not an option. It is a method to glorify Allah, clean up our money, and remember that Allah gave us whatever we have.

And establish prayer and give zakah, and whatever good you put forward for yourselves – you will find it with Allah.” Surah Al-Baqarah (2:110)

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said,

“The generous person is close to Allah, close to Paradise, and close to people’s hearts.”

This Hadith indicates why Islam places a high value on giving to others. When we give Zakat, donate to charity, or take part in helping charity work, we are not just giving money. We are sharing love, making things easier, and bringing people together.

Every sincere gift brings blessings. Every meal given, every drop of clean water shared, and every penny spent for good is an investment in eternity.

Lessons from the Ansar for Today

The Ansar were generous all the time, not just once. What they did will always be a lesson for all Muslims. Here are some things we may all learn from their example:

Palestine appeal

Stand Together in Unity

The Ansar and Muhajirun came from different cities and cultures, yet they stood side by side. In the UK, where Muslims come from many backgrounds, our unity is our strength. When we support a global charity, we continue that same bond of brotherhood.

Support the Displaced and Vulnerable

The Muhajirun left Makkah as migrants seeking safety and faith. Today, a lot of families around the world have to leave their homes. When we help through a charity initiative, we revive the compassion that once defined the Ansar.

Give Even When It's Hard

True generosity doesn’t depend on wealth; it depends on will. The Quran praises the Ansar because they gave even when they needed help. This shows us that no donation is too small. Allah honours every good deed, whether offering food, supporting a water charity, or contributing a little of your money.

Make it a Habit to Give

The Ansar didn’t stop their kindness after a few days. It became a lifelong commitment. We can also make giving a regular part of our lives. Giving Zakat or Sadaqah every month keeps the blessings coming long after we have given.

Show kindness to people all across the World

The Ansar helped those closest to them. We can now talk to folks all around the world. Giving money to a global charity or programmes that help people acquire food and water keeps the spirit of goodwill alive that started in Madinah.

Bringing hope through small acts of kindness—a meal, a helping hand, or a gift can light up a child’s day.

How to Bring the Spirit of the Ansar into Your Life

Here are some ways you can carry their example forward in your own life:

  • Donate your Zakat: Give your Zakat to a reliable organisation, like United Muslims, that helps those in need.
  • Distribute food: Help stock local food banks or distribute meals through community projects.
  • Help a water charity: Give clean, safe water to families who don’t have access to it.
  • Donate for Palestine: Help restore lives harmed by conflict and occupation.
  • Give to charity regularly: Even a little bit regularly is something Allah loves.
  • Keep your intention pure: Give quietly, without seeking praise.

The Prophet (PBUH) stated,

“The most beloved deeds to Allah are those consistent, even if small.”

Quality is more important than quantity. Giving regularly keeps you in touch with what others need and reminds you of how blessed you are.

Reviving the Ansar's Legacy

The Prophet (PBUH) said:

“None loves the Ansar but a believer, and none hates them but a hypocrite. Whoever loves them, Allah will love him.”

Loving the Ansar means following their kindness, giving, and understanding path. Their actions were not driven by wealth but by faith and sincerity.

We follow in their footsteps by paying Zakat, giving money to a charity, or contributing to Palestine. We help those who cannot help themselves, connect with others, and show mercy.

The story of the Ansar teaches us that the greatest form of charity is giving with love. It is the smile, the care, and the intention that count most.

A Final Thought

The Ansar and Muhajirun made a community out of charity. They showed the world that being kind to others makes you strong.

We can become helpers in our modern world, surrounded by need and opportunity. Every act of giving is a seed of hope. Allah says:

The example of those who spend their wealth in the cause of Allah is that of a grain that sprouts into seven ears, each bearing one hundred grains. And Allah multiplies for whom He wills.” – Surah Al-Baqarah (2:261)

So don’t hold back when you donate. Give your donation to someone hurting and let it be a bridge of hope. Let your generosity light up a life.
