Contributing to Community Through Fidya

Islam emphasises compassion in every aspect of life. Fidya is a charitable act in Islam that allows Muslims who are unable to fast during Ramadan to contribute to the community in a different way. It is required for those who cannot fast due to valid reasons such as illness or old age. Fidya donations not only compensate for the missed fasts but also helps donors remain connected to the spirit of Ramadan.

Calculation of Fidya

Fidya is calculated for each day of missed fasting. It can be given by feeding a needy individual with two full meals or donating the equivalent amount in staple food. The accepted amount per missed fast is generally set at 3 kgs, which ensures compliance across different Islamic perspectives. For Muslims who are permanently unable to fast due to health reasons, paying Fidya is necessary. You can use our online calculator to work out the amount owed. At the current rate, Fidya is set at £5 per missed fast.

Differences Between Kaffarah and Fidya

Kaffarah and Fidya are different in Islam. Fidya is given when Muslims miss fasts for valid reasons such as illness or old age. Kaffarah is for fasts that are broken or missed on purpose, and the compensation is more serious. The amounts for Kaffarah and Fidya are not the same, which is why we provide separate forms and calculators on our website.

If you missed fasts in Ramadan due to illness, old age, or reasons beyond your control, you can use our Fidya form to calculate and pay the correct amount online. You can also give Fidya for fasts missed in past Ramadans and fulfil this duty as Allah has commanded. Please use our Kaffarah calculator to pay for intentionally missed or broken fasts.

And as for those who can fast with difficulty, they have (a choice either to fast or) to feed a poor person (for every day).

– Qur’an (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:184)

How United Muslims is taking care of your Fidya donations

Feeding Families in Ramadan

Your Fidya helps us provide hot meals and food parcels to families struggling to put food on the table during the blessed month of Ramadan.

We distribute bread, rice, and basic food items so that those living in poverty do not go hungry, especially when fasting in Ramadan.

Many Fidya meals are served in our orphanages and to widowed mothers. This ensures that the most vulnerable in our Ummah are cared for with dignity.

With your Fidya, we send food aid to people living in unfavourable conditions like Gaza, Kenya, and Pakistan, where hunger is a daily struggle.

Your Fidya doesn’t stop with Ramadan. We provide food support throughout the year to help families recover and survive.

From a plate of rice to a loaf of bread, every Fidya meal given through United Muslims feeds a hungry soul and brings hope to the needy.
